Brown and Caldwell designed wastewater treatment plant upgrades at the $13.9 million Indian Head Wastewater Treatment Plant in Indian Head, Maryland, for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC). The tightening of Chesapeake Bay nutrient requirements, along with the facility’s aging infrastructure, prompted NAVFAC to upgrade the plant, turning it into a highly automated and aesthetically pleasing facility.
One of the first design-build wastewater projects in Maryland, the facility complies with the Maryland Department of the Environment water quality standards for nitrogen and phosphorus levels. Design features of the upgraded 0.5 mgd plant help the facility operate more sustainably and meet new enhanced nutrient removal discharge limits required by the Chesapeake Bay Restoration initiatives.
