Securing future water supplies with a groundbreaking program

San Diego’s historic $3 billion program will produce one third of the city’s drinking water by 2035, securing a locally controlled, drought-proof water supply. As part of the program management team, Brown and Caldwell is providing engineering services for new water purification facilities, regulation and legislation development, continued operation of the Advanced Water Purification Demonstration Facility, additional treatment barriers for a potential direct potable reuse project, and an education and outreach program. An initial 30 mgd water purification facility is planned to be operational by 2023 with a long-term goal to produce 83 mgd of purified water by 2035. The program will benefit the marine environment by reducing discharges into the ocean and will address current and future water supply needs for generations to come.
