Securing future water supplies with a groundbreaking program

As San Diego’s largest integrated infrastructure program, the Pure Water Program aims to produce 83 million gallons per day (MGD) of purified water, nearly half of metropolis’ supply. This new recycled water is a sustainable source, reducing the city’s reliance on the Colorado River and Northern California.

As part of the program management team, Brown and Caldwell is providing engineering services for new water purification facilities, regulation and legislation development, continued operation of the Advanced Water Purification Demonstration Facility, additional treatment barriers for a potential direct potable reuse project, and an education and outreach program. Commissioning of the initial 30 mgd water purification facility is planned to start in 2026.

The program will benefit the marine environment by reducing discharges into the ocean and will address current and future water supply needs for generations to come.
