WALNUT CREEK — Brown and Caldwell is proud to announce that IntensiCarb™ has been honored with the prestigious Bronze IWA Project Innovation Award in the category of Breakthroughs in Research and Development at the IWA World Water Congress & Exhibition in Toronto, Canada on Tuesday, August 13th, 2024.
The award recognizes groundbreaking research developed and led by USP Technologies, Trojan Technologies, Brown and Caldwell, University of Western Ontario, Toronto Metropolitan University, Great Lake Water Authority (GLWA), and Dynamita; with funding support from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and Next Generation Manufacturing Canada (NGEN).
IntensiCarb™ is a “bolt-on” intensification technology, compatible with existing infrastructure and represents a significant advancement in the efficiency and sustainability of solids treatment. This innovative technology combines vacuum evaporation with anaerobic digestion or fermentation, allowing for more than quadrupling treatment capacity within existing infrastructure. The innovative anaerobic digestion intensification technology will be piloted with GLWA in Detroit, MI early next year.
“The IntensiCarb™ process, which enhances treatment and also integrates resource recovery, is a game-changer with significant life-cycle cost reductions for our clients.”
Dr. Chris Muller, BC’s National Technology Innovation Leader
“We are thrilled to receive this recognition from the International Water Association after years of research investment and collaboration,” said Dr. Kati Bell, Director of Water Strategy at Brown and Caldwell. Dr. Farokh Kakar, who received a scholarship for her dissertation work on IntensiCarb™ said:
“This is the result of our entire team’s dedication to advancing solid science from concept to application, and the award reflects the dedication and hard work of a well-connected international team.”
Brown and Caldwell extends its gratitude to our development partners and to the IWA for this honor; remaining committed to leading the transition towards a more sustainable future.
The award was presented during the IWA World Water Congress & Expo held in Toronto, Canada during August 12-15, 2024. There were more than 100 submissions for consideration and the Breakthroughs in Research and Development category included submissions from full-scale as well as bench and pilot-testing. The IWA Project Innovation Awards are a testament to the creative solutions and long-term value that innovative projects bring to the water sector.
