Facing unpredictable climate-related risks to their water supplies and infrastructure, Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS) engaged with the Water Research Foundation and selected BC to evaluate the impacts of climate change and develop adaptive strategies for the BWS. This adaptive planning approach yielded an iterative process to promote flexible decision making in the face of uncertainties and increase preparedness. It addresses a range of potential changing conditions for near-, mid-, and long-term implementation. This same approach can be implemented for a range of potential conditions including future climate predictions, water supply demands, and economic development to promote flexibility throughout changing conditions.
The Water Research Foundation Project 4637
The vulnerability assessment evaluated potential climate change impacts on current estimates of groundwater sustainable yield (the chief source of BWS’s water supply), pipeline infrastructure assets, and identified a suite of strategies to address the anticipated changes. Using a One Water approach, essential stakeholders were involved to also prepare and plan for climate change impacts.
