WALNUT CREEK, Calif., July 18, 2024 — Brown and Caldwell today announced it is growing its water reuse practice as industry expert Dr. Fred Gerringer joins the firm as national specialty leader of reuse regulations and policy.

With more than 15 years of experience in potable reuse regulations and technologies, Gerringer is a trusted leader in reliably and safely delivering clean drinking water to help our communities and the environment thrive.

He has collaborated directly with regional and state water regulatory agencies on compliance and worked on premier water reuse projects covering California, including:

  • Developing the engineering report that will be the foundation of regulatory permitting for the City of Los Angeles’ Advanced Water Purification Facility at the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant;
  • Advising the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power on regulatory requirements and treatment considerations to produce 210 million gallons per day of indirect and direct potable reuse water from the City of Los Angeles’ Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant;
  • Leading the process design and equipment selection of the ultraviolet light advanced oxidation process and ozone systems of the Pure Water Monterey Groundwater Replenishment Project; and
  • Writing the test plan to obtain the State of California’s first regulatory approval of Tier 2 pathogen removal credits for a membrane bioreactor system through demonstration testing at the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (Los Angeles)’s Grace F. Napolitano Pure Water Southern California Innovation Center.

In his new role, Gerringer will collaborate with clients, project teams, subject matter experts, contractors, and the Water Reuse Practice Team to advance the firm’s continued growth in One Water. Leveraging his deep expertise and knowledge of complex environmental projects as a professional engineer, he will lead regulatory surveillance on both a state and federal level, providing actionable guidance to clients and agencies.

“We are excited to welcome Fred to Brown and Caldwell. His deep experience successfully and efficiently collaborating and delivering critical water reuse projects in a rapidly changing regulatory landscape will continue our One Water growth as we help clients build a resilient and sustainable water supply legacy for generations to come.”
Director of Technical Practices Meghan Krishnayya

Based in Los Angeles, Gerringer is a Professional Engineer in California, holding a doctorate in environmental science and engineering and a master’s degree in civil/environmental engineering from UCLA and a bachelor’s degree in civil/environmental engineering from UC Berkeley.
