High-impact, industry-leading PFAS research. Recently, Water Environment Research has recognized two papers led by Lloyd Winchell, a Brown and Caldwell PFAS expert, among its most influential.

“Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances Thermal Destruction at Water Resource Recovery Facilities: A State of the Science Review” (November 2020) and “Pyrolysis and Gasification at Water Resource Recovery Facilities: Status of the Industry” (March 2022), both published by the Water Environment Federation journal, have earned the following distinctions, respectively:

  • WEF Top Cited Article 2020-2021
  • Top 10 Most Downloaded Papers 2019-2020
  • Top Cited Paper in 2022-2023
  • Top 10% Most Downloaded 2022

This research comes at a pivotal time. The EPA has stepped up the pace for PFAS regulations, including the recently finalized Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) for six PFAS in drinking water. Public water systems must monitor for these PFAS and have three years to complete initial monitoring (by mid-2027), followed by ongoing compliance monitoring. More regulatory action is expected across all sectors.

Other co-authors include EnviroChem Services’ Martha Wells (2020 paper) and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago’s Thaís B. Pluth and Dominic A. Brose (2022 paper).
