This paper discusses the use of simulations for training wastewater treatment plant operators. The simulations combine common laboratory tests with process theory to enhance an operator’s understanding of the controllable and uncontrollable variables associated with aspects of wastewater treatment process control. Criteria for developing successful simulations are presented. Example simulations for understanding denitrification and for using oxygen uptake rate are discussed.
