Many municipalities, private agencies, and federal agencies are adopting goals to require that all new construction shall seek Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) certification. However, this certification was developed by architects to promote high-performance buildings and it is poorly adapted to municipal infrastructure such as water and wastewater treatment facilities. This paper discusses the opportunities for appropriate use of LEED™ for municipal infrastructure projects.
