The Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati (MSD) Wastewater Treatment Division (WWT) has been using IBM’s Maximo Asset Management v4 for several years. Over the past few years, attempts at upgrading to a newer version have been made and have not succeeded. Several issues prevented MSD from successfully migrating to a newer version of Maximo. The issues stemmed from several different areas, ranging from variations in business processes, competing priorities, changes in staff and consultants, inconsistent historical data, and advancing technology. On May 13, 2013, MSD WWT began using the new Maximo v7.5 software system after successfully addressing these issues and deploying the software. The approach used to successfully upgrade the software system and lessons learned are reviewed below.
