Many laboratory or pilot-plant studies of the activated sludge process are documented each year. Unfortunately their theoretical nature and the difficulty of scaling up their data often means their findings are never applied to actual design or operational situations. The experience related in this paper, however, provides a unique opportunity to observe process changes in a major on-line activated sludge treatment plant. As such, it presents the designer and operator with conclusions which have direct applicability to other full scale situations.
