The East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) operates and maintains several remote effluent reuse systems associated with their upcountry water reservoirs in Calaveras and Amador Counties in northern California (approximately 25 miles southeast of Sacramento).. At Lake Camanche, EBMUD operates a wastewater pond system with effluent reuse by sprinkler irrigation on the north shore and wastewater pond system followed by rapid infiltration on the south shore. In addition, Amador Water Agency (AWA) operates a wastewater pond-spray field system on the north shore that serves a residential development called Lake Camanche Village. EBMUD and AWA are cooperating on a study (Joint Feasibility Study) of the potential for a joint project involving their two north shore communities. Options for treatment and reuse are presented that range from disinfected tertiary effluent and spray irrigation to facultative ponds, treatment wetlands and reuse wetlands. The regulatory requirements and nitrogen loadings for the land treatment and reuse alternatives are compared.
