The impact of the drought of wastewater treatment plants is important to water purveyers and suppliers for two reasons. First, wastewater effluents are often discharged to waterways used again downstream as water supplies. A decrease in effluent quality, especially with less stream water for dilution at low flow, could adversely affect the quality of water remaining for future use. Second, the value of wastewater for reclamation projects may be severely degraded by low flows during the drought. Low sewage flows today may also be representative of normal flows in the future as water conservation is promoted.
