Instrumentation and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems are becoming more and more sophisticated and allow processes and treatment systems that were once difficult to automate, to be reliably automated. In many cases, the control and monitoring can be completed remotely and data acquisition and trending is provided to allow for extensive process control. With the current trend of reduction of operation and maintenance staff at wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), automation of processes and treatment systems is becoming more critical. This paper discusses the systematic approach used by one agency to automate their WWTP and in particular, their primary treatment, digestion and solids process systems.
