In any exercise to improve efficiency, the greatest opportunities for savings will usually be in areas where maximum expenditure is incurred. An analysis of capital expenditure in the United Kingdom Water Industry (Figure 1) shows that about 30% is in connection with sewerage. Of this, about 80% relates directly to upgrading the performance of existing sewer systems, i.e. sewerage rehabilitation; the remainder relating to new works and other areas (Figure 2).
