Background and objectives of a full scale test of combustion and pyrolysis of sludge and refuse derived fuel are discussed. Modifications to a conventional multiple-hearth furnace facility for the test program are described. Testing procedures, including operating modes, feed methods, solids sampling, gas sampling, and corrosion testing are presented. Test problems and solutions applied are related. Observed test results are discussed with a description of the expected content of the final report.
