The transfer of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from wastewater to the atmosphere during wastewater treatment has become an issue of concern in recent years. The chemicals which have been identified in fugitive emissions from wastewater treatment processes including toxic air contaminants (TACs), ground level ozone generators and stratospheric ozone depletors. In the U.S., national emissions standards for hazardous air pollutants (NESHAPs) have been established under the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA). The hazardous organic NESHAP (HON) which was originally developed for the synthetic organic chemical manufacturing industry (SOCMI) identifies wastewater treatment as an area of potentially significant air emissions.
