Design recommendations are presented for the application of automatic dissolved oxygen (DO) control systems to the activated sludge processes. The installation, application and maintenance history of DO probes is discussed. Feed-forward and feedback DO control systems for diffused air and mechanical aeration systems are described, together with a comparison of digital and analog DO control techniques. Advantages of automatic DO control are related with reference made to demonstrated powered savings at case history plants where automatic DO control is employed.
