GVRD has experimented with full-scale primary sludge thermophilic digestion at is Lion’s Gate Plant for about 2 years. Two-stage continuous flow thermophilic digestion with 20 days’ detention time for each stage is used. A reduction of several orders of magnitude in indicator organism and pathogenic organism densities has been achieved in the digested sludge. Results to date indicate that Class A levels of fecal coliform density levels for Class A sludge of less than 1,000 MPN per gram total solids have been met consistently in the digested sludge after the tow-stage digestion process; Class A levels of pathogen density are not met after single-stage thermophilic digestion.
