Operable Unit Three (OU3) of the FCX-Statesville Superfund Site (Site) consists of a groundwater plume containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs), primarily perchloroethene (PCE) and its daughter products including trichloroethene (TCE) and cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cDCE). The VOCs have originated from historic operations within a 275,000 sq ft former textile plant. The record of decision (ROD) for OU3 prescribes a remedy for the groundwater that includes air sparging and soil vapor extraction (AS/SVE) to address the source area beneath the former textile plant and monitored natural attenuation (MNA) to address the outer plume area where VOC concentrations are lower. The source area is located on a groundwater divide and the plume extends both north and south of the Site within a shallow saprolite zone and an immediate fractured bedrock zone. The ROD allows the use of an observational approach for the remedy. This paper presents the AS/SVE design approach, the turn key installation, and the success of the AS/SVE system at removing approximately 5,500 kg of PCE from the source area.
AN OBSERVATIONAL APPROACH FOR EFFECTIVE REMOVAL OF PCE BY AS/SVE.
