Eckenfelder Scholarship

Dr. Wesley Eckenfelder, Jr.’s career as an environmental trailblazer spanned more than 50 years, during which time he trained thousands of graduate students and professionals in the science and art of industrial wastewater treatment.

To honor his dedication to the environmental industry, we offer a $5,000 Dr. Wesley Eckenfelder, Jr. Scholarship to support students who are interested in pursuing a career in the environmental profession. In addition, the scholarship recipient will receive a paid summer internship at Brown and Caldwell’s Eckenfelder Lab located in Nashville, TN.

Applications for 2025 are closed and will reopen in 2026. This year’s applicants will be notified of their status by the end of May.

Criteria

  • A United States citizen or permanent resident.
  • A full-time student enrolled in their Junior, Senior year or graduate program at an accredited college/university in fall 2025.
  • Declared major in civil, chemical, mechanical, electrical or environmental engineering or one of the environmental sciences (e.g. geology, hydrogeology, ecology).
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent on a 5.0 scale).
  • The ability to commit to a paid summer internship (flexible start and end date per applicant’s academic schedule) at Brown and Caldwell’s Eckenfelder Lab located in Nashville, TN. This internship is 100% in-person, and Brown and Caldwell does not offer relocation assistance or housing assistance for interns. 
  • Must have current driver’s license and good driving record. 
  • The paid internship is subject to a pre-employment background check and pre-employment drug test. 

Required Documents

All candidates must submit with a completed application:

  • A resume.
  • An essay of 250 words minimum, “Tell us about a personal experience that influenced your decision to focus on environmental studies.”
  • Two written recommendations, with at least one from a university official (e.g. advisor, professor).
  • An official transcript of your academic record.

Scholarship funds may only be used for university/college billed expenses such as tuition.
