Strict attention to reactor design detail is necessary if bench scale activated sludge units are to be reliable in predicting prototype activated sludge performance. This is especially important if sludge separation characteristics are to be simulated accurately. Critical features are: aeration basin configuration including details of feed and recycle sludge introduction; control of dissolved oxygen; and use of continuous flow or batch feeding and secondary clarifier details.
