A beneficial water reuse project has been implemented by Maui Pineapple Company to drip irrigate seed sugarcane with pineapple process water. After pilot testing sod farm irrigation, Maui Pineapple changed the project and now pumps its process and cooling water to a site owned by HC & S. The pineapple processing facility generates about 0.8 mgd of processing water and about 0.9 mgd of once-through can cooling water. Water is generated year-round, except for maintenance periods. The process water is twice screened, mixed with the cooling water, pumped to an equalizing storage pond, screened again and filtered, and then used to irrigate seed cane through drip tubing.
