The concept of environmental protection is relatively new. Although waste treatment and management have been practiced throughout the world in various forms for many years, the environmental movement did not officially start until the Earth Day occurred in the United States of America (U.S.A.) in 1970. During the same year the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEOA) and the president’s Council on Environmental Quality were established. Since then many laws and regulations have been promulgated for environmental pollution control and prevention in the U.S. Much has been done over the past 22 years to comply with the environmental regulations in the U.S. Hundreds of billions of dollars have been spent to install pollution control equipment and monitoring systems. Through the experiences of failure and success, and much research effort, many new or modified technologies have evolved. Today, the U.S. is considered the leading nation in environmental policy and technology. The purpose of this paper is to introduce some of the American environmental control technologies that may be transferrable to the Republic of China (ROC) in Taiwan. These technologies are by no means exhaustive and they may not be the most advanced type. However, these, in our opinion, may be of significant benefit to ROC’s environmental industry and transferrable to ROC.
