Green infrastructure reduces CSOs, city costs

Portland, Oregon’s “Green Streets” initiative will reduce CSOs as well as address water quality requirements for the City’s NPDES permit for municipal stormwater outside of the combined sewer area. Brown and Caldwell designed retrofit stormwater facilities to collect, filter, infiltrate and convey stormwater runoff from existing streets. These low-impact development (LID) designs – including vegetated street and sidewalk planters, pervious paving, and other infiltration practices – address parking and pedestrian needs while supporting water quality and quantity goals. By combining green infrastructure with grey infrastructure improvements such as sewer reconstruction, Brown and Caldwell reduced the City’s design and construction costs.
