Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to transform the water and environmental sectors. In 2025, two Texas water and wastewater utilities participated in a multi-part workshop series to learn about the capabilities of AI, specifically of a type of generative AI called large language models (LLMs), which are capable of understanding and generating human language based on patterns learned from vast datasets. Workshop participants identified applications of LLMs within water and wastewater utilities, discussed key challenges to adopt technology, and developed customized roadmaps to integrating this new technology at their utilities. The workshop series culminated in the development of pilot applications that are aimed at solving a technical challenge at their utilities. These and other applications are described along with recommendations for adopting innovative AI technologies.
