A laboratory test of chemical oxidation using permanganate was conducted for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) at the former Titan I-A Missile Facility (Site) located in Lincoln, California. The purpose of the test was to determine if chemical oxidation would be an effective in situ remedial alternative for Site groundwater contaminated with volatile organic compounds (VOCs), primarily trichloroethylene. Groundwater is found in a thin perched layer above granite bedrock and the heterogeneity and low permeability of the soil have complicated remedial efforts. A pilot test groundwater extraction and treatment system has been moderately effective in removing VOC mass and reducing VOC concentrations.
